Mäkiraonmäki Museum and Cultural Center

Experience an authentic 19th-century village setting

Mäkiraonmäki offers a unique glimpse into the past, as the area still preserves the atmosphere of an 1800s village. The cluster of houses and the church formed the traditional village center.

Over the years, the buildings have served various purposes, including a pharmacy, a dyer’s and a scribe’s cottage, the municipal office, rural outbuildings, and a hub of political activity. The area also includes a windmill, granaries, and a grain storehouse. These buildings survived when the great fire of Kannus struck in 1934.

Kannus’ local heritage museum operates in the old grain storehouse opposite the Työväentalo. The museum is open during summer events.

The school museum’s collection is displayed in two rooms of the Aapa cottage. The school museum is open during the café’s opening hours in the summer.

The Oskari Tokoi Museum was opened in 1992 by the Oskari Tokoi Society in the basement of Työväentalo. The museum is dedicated to the life’s work of Oskari Tokoi (1873–1963), a politician from Kannus who later worked as a journalist.
